What is a good standing certificate?

A letter from the regulator you are registered with confirming that your registration is valid and that you face no disciplinary action. Every GCC health authority requires one, and most will not accept a certificate more than six months old at the point your file is assessed.

What does it actually confirm?

Certificate of good standing
A statement from your regulator that your registration is current and in good order, and that no disciplinary finding or pending proceeding stands against you. Also issued under names such as certificate of current professional status or letter of verification of registration.
What it is not
Not a reference from your employer, not a police clearance, not a certificate of experience, and not proof of your qualification. Those are separate documents, and substituting one for another is a documented reason for a returned application.
Who issues it
The professional regulator you are registered with, in the country where you hold that registration. Your employer cannot issue it and a university cannot issue it.

Why does the six month rule catch people out?

Because the clock runs against the wrong end of your application. The certificate is dated when your regulator issues it, and it is assessed when the GCC authority gets to your file, which can be months later.

A candidate who is efficient and gathers every document before starting is the one most exposed. Obtain the certificate in January, spend three months on verification and attestation, submit in April, and have the file assessed in July, and a perfectly valid certificate has expired between your diligence and their queue.

The practical sequencing

  • Request it late, not early. Ideally once verification is well advanced and you can see the submission date approaching.
  • Find out your regulator's turnaround first. Some issue within days, others take weeks. That turnaround, not the six months, is what determines how late you can safely leave it.
  • Add attestation time if your certificate needs it. That happens in the issuing country and it consumes part of the same six months.
  • If it expires, request a fresh one. There is no mechanism to extend one, and no authority accepts an explanation in place of a current certificate.

How do you obtain one?

  1. Step 01

    Identify the right issuing body

The regulator holding your registration. Where you have registered in more than one jurisdiction over your career, ask the GCC authority whether it wants one from each or only from the current one.

  2. Step 02

Check what the receiving authority requires it to say

Some authorities want the certificate addressed to them by name, or sent directly by the issuing regulator rather than passed through you. A certificate that is correct in substance and wrong in routing still fails.

  3. Step 03

Request it, and pay the issuing regulator directly

In your own name, with your own receipt. As with every fee in this process, money routed through an intermediary is money you cannot trace.

  4. Step 04

Attest it if the receiving authority requires it

Performed in the country that issued it. See document attestation for the chain and its order.

What does it cost?

Two charges from two different bodies, and only one of them is published in a way we can cite.

Which authorities require one?

Every GCC health authority we cover. The six month rule is documented for DHA and applied comparably elsewhere, though each authority sets its own wording and routing requirements.

What else do people ask about good standing?

What is a certificate of good standing?

A letter from the regulator you are currently or most recently registered with, confirming that your registration is valid and that you face no pending or concluded disciplinary action. Some regulators call it a certificate of current professional status or a letter of verification of registration.

How old can it be?

For DHA it must be no older than six months at the time of submission, and most GCC health authorities apply a comparable rule. That is measured at the moment the authority assesses your file, not the moment you uploaded it.

Who issues mine?

The regulator you are registered with, not your employer and not your university. For a nurse registered in India that is the state nursing council; for a doctor registered in the UK it is the GMC. If you hold registrations in more than one jurisdiction, the authority may want one from each.

What does it cost?

Two separate charges. The issuing regulator charges its own fee, which varies widely by country. DHA publishes a handling figure of AED 100-500, noting that it varies by issuing country. must be less than 6 months old at submission.

Can I get one if I am not currently working?

Usually yes, provided your registration is still live. What you generally cannot get is a good standing certificate from a registration that has lapsed, which is one reason letting a licence expire is more expensive than it first appears.

What if my regulator does not issue one?

Some regulators issue a differently named document that serves the same purpose, and authorities generally accept it. Ask the GCC authority what it will accept before you pay for something that may not satisfy it, rather than afterwards.

Does it need attestation?

Sometimes, depending on the issuing country and the receiving authority. If it does, that is a separate chain performed in the country that issued the certificate, and it consumes part of your six months. See document attestation.
