Who needs a DOH licence?

Anyone practising a regulated healthcare profession at a facility in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. That includes Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain and Al Dhafra, and it includes both public and private facilities.

  • Doctors and dentists across every recognised specialty
  • Nurses and midwives
  • Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians
  • Physiotherapists and other allied health professionals
  • Laboratory technicians and radiographers

What is the DOH licensing process?

  1. Step 01

Establish eligibility for the title you want

Each authority publishes the qualifications it accepts for each title. The same degree can map to a different grade in Abu Dhabi than in Dubai, and the grade decides what you can be employed as.

  2. Step 02

    Primary source verification

Your qualifications, registration and employment history are confirmed at source. Standard verification takes 15-25 working days from the date of payment and submission of a complete set of documents.

  3. Step 03

    Examination

A Prometric or authority assessment set by profession and specialty. The DOH examination fee is AED 1,400-1,700, payable in full on each attempt.

  4. Step 04

    Application, licence and renewal

Portal submission, classification at the correct title, then the licence itself against an employing facility. Renewal and continuing education credits run from the issue date.

The sequence is the one every GCC health authority runs, explained in general on how it works. What is specific to DOH is the fee schedule above and the title mapping for your qualification.

How long does DOH licensing take?

Typically 4-12 weeks. That matches the pattern across the UAE emirate authorities, and as everywhere it is dominated by verification rather than by the authority's own assessment time.

Standard verification runs 15-25 working days from the date of payment and submission of a complete set of documents. The delays that actually happen come from missing or incomplete documents, inaccurate information at submission, late response from the issuing authority.

What documents are required?

DOH does not publish a checklist we have been able to source, so the set below is what every UAE health authority asks for. It is what to start assembling, not a complete authority-specific answer.

  • Passport and photograph
  • Degree certificate and transcriptsAttested in the country that issued them.
  • Postgraduate and specialty qualificationsThese decide the title you are classified at.
  • Current professional registration or licence
  • Good standing certificateUAE authorities generally require one under six months old at submission.
  • Experience certificatesSigned by HR or the medical director rather than a supervisor.

Why are DOH applications rejected?

[VERIFY: DOH published rejection reasons. No authority-specific list has been sourced.]

What we can tell you is that the documentary failures returning applications are consistent across UAE health authorities, and the set documented for DHA is representative:

  • Good standing certificate older than six months
  • Experience certificates not signed by HR or the medical director
  • Qualification not matching the DHA Professional Qualification Requirements for the applied title
  • Incomplete or illegible document scans
  • Mismatch between passport name and certificate names

Those are documented for DHA specifically. We present them here as the general pattern rather than as DOH's own published list, because they are not the same thing and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Which professions does DOH license?

Requirements, examinations and title mapping all differ by profession. DOH licenses the following, and profession-specific guides are published for the authorities where we have sourced the detail.

What else do people ask about DOH licensing?

Does my DHA licence work in Abu Dhabi?

No. Abu Dhabi is regulated by the Department of Health and Dubai by DHA, and neither licence carries into the other emirate. Health regulation in the UAE sits at emirate level rather than federally, so a licence is tied to the emirate you obtained it in.

What does DOH licensing cost in total?

Government and third-party fees typically total AED 4,100-7,800. That breaks down as verification at AED 1,100-1,400, examination at AED 1,400-1,700 and application at AED 800-1,800. Our advisory fee is separate and quoted per case.

How long does DOH licensing take?

Typically 4-12 weeks, in line with the other UAE emirate authorities. Verification is the stage that moves the number, and a complete document set at first submission is the single biggest thing within your control.

Is the DOH examination harder than the DHA one?

We will not claim a comparative difficulty we cannot evidence. What differs concretely is the fee: DOH publishes a higher examination fee than DHA. Both are set by profession and specialty, and both are payable again in full on a reattempt.

Can I hold both a DOH and a DHA licence?

Yes, and practitioners working across both emirates do. Each is a separate application with its own fee and its own renewal clock. The verification report can often be reused across authorities, which saves both the fee and the waiting.

Do I need an employer before applying?

Not to establish eligibility. The licence itself is issued against a facility, so the final step waits for an employer, but the verification and assessment stages do not. Starting them early is usually the right call given verification is the long pole.
