DHA Licence for Laboratory technicians

A DHA licence for laboratory technicians is the registration you need to work in a clinical laboratory on Dubai mainland. Two things decide your application: whether your qualification supports the technician or technologist title, and which laboratory discipline you are being assessed in. Laboratory work falls in the allied health verification band.

Technician, technologist, and in which discipline?

Laboratory applications carry two classification questions rather than one, which is why they are more often returned for a title mismatch than most allied health files.

The first is the title. Technician and technologist are separate registrations in most systems, with different qualification requirements and different scopes. Job titles used by employers are not a reliable guide to which one your qualification supports: a person employed for ten years as a technologist may hold a qualification that maps to technician.

The second is discipline. Clinical biochemistry, microbiology, haematology and histopathology are distinct areas of practice, and the evidence that establishes your competence in one does not establish it in another.

What does DHA require of laboratory technicians?

DHA assesses laboratory applications against its published qualification requirements for each title. Your employer's job title is not what is assessed; your qualification is.

The free Sheryan self-assessment is where to establish which title your qualification supports before any fee is paid.

  • A recognised laboratory science or medical technology qualification
  • Evidence of the discipline you practise in and are applying under
  • Current registration or licence, where your country issues one
  • Post-qualification laboratory experience evidenced by signed certificates
  • [VERIFY: whether DHA licenses laboratory staff by discipline or under a single general title, and which qualification levels map to technician against technologist.]

What exam do laboratory technicians take?

A Prometric assessment set for laboratory practice, and potentially set differently by title and by discipline.

Some qualifications and titles are exempt from assessment. Establish your position before booking a non-refundable examination.

[VERIFY: DHA examination blueprint, question count, duration and pass mark for this profession and its specialties. Obtain from DHA before publishing any figure.]

Why no single question count applies across professions, and what to ask your authority instead, is covered on our Prometric explainer.

What documents do laboratory technicians need?

What to assemble, with the items specific to laboratory technicians marked by what they have to establish.

  • Passport and photograph to the authority specification
  • Laboratory science or medical technology qualification, attestedThe level of this award is what separates the technician and technologist titles.
  • Academic transcriptsOften decisive here, because they evidence which laboratory disciplines your programme covered.
  • Current registration or licence, where your country issues oneMany countries do not register laboratory staff. Where yours does not, expect DHA to want alternative evidence.
  • Good standing certificate, where a registering body existsLess than six months old at submission.
  • Experience certificates signed by HR or the laboratory directorShould state the disciplines you worked in, not only the job title you held.
  • Discipline-specific training or competency records, where heldUseful where your qualification is general and your practice is specialised.

Good standing must come from the body that registers laboratory professionals in your country, where one exists, and GCC authorities generally accept one only while it is under six months old. The sequencing trap is explained on our good standing guide.

How much does it cost for laboratory technicians?

Regulator and third-party fees only, paid by you directly to the authority or provider. Where a row reads Not published we hold no sourced figure and will not estimate one.

Laboratory work is an allied health profession, so the lower fixed verification package DHA quotes for nurses and allied health is the band that applies.

Our advisory fee is not published. It is quoted per case, in writing, after a free eligibility consultation, because it depends on your title, how many credentials need verifying and whether attestation applies. The costs page explains what moves that number.

How long does it take?

Typically 4-12 weeks for DHA licensing overall. Dependent on how quickly primary source verification clears.

The item most likely to slow a laboratory application is an experience certificate that names a job title but not the disciplines worked in. Getting it reissued with the detail DHA needs is slower than getting it right first time.

Where your country does not register laboratory staff, resolving what DHA accepts in place of good standing is best done at the start.

Verification itself runs 15-25 working days from the date of payment and submission of a complete set of documents, and a resubmission costs 50 to 100 percent of the original fee. See DataFlow verification.

This page covers laboratory technicians under DHA specifically. The authority, the sibling professions and the same profession elsewhere in the Gulf are covered separately.

What else do laboratory technicians ask?

What is the difference between technician and technologist?

They are separate registrations in most systems, with different qualification requirements and different scopes of practice. Which one your file supports is assessed from your qualification, not from the job title your employer gave you, and the two frequently disagree.

Does my discipline matter, or is it one laboratory licence?

We hold no sourced statement of whether DHA licenses by discipline or under a general title, so we will not tell you either way. What is safe to act on is that your evidence should establish the disciplines you actually practise in, because a file that does not is harder to assess.

My experience certificate just says medical laboratory technologist. Is that enough?

It may not be. A certificate that names a title but not the disciplines you worked in tells an assessor less than one that does. Where you can, have it reissued to state the areas of practice as well as the role.

How much is verification for laboratory staff?

Laboratory work is allied health, so the lower of the two fixed packages DHA quotes applies, the band it describes as nurses and allied health. Figures are published on this page.

My country does not register laboratory staff. What do I use for good standing?

Ask DHA what it accepts instead. This is a common position and there is normally a route, but establish it before submission rather than after a return.

Does a DHA licence cover Dubai Healthcare City?

No. Laboratories operating inside Dubai Healthcare City are regulated by DHCR, a separate regulator. A DHA licence has no validity inside the free zone.
