SCFHS Licence for Dentists

An SCFHS registration is what permits a dentist to practise anywhere in Saudi Arabia. Classification is applied for at registration and materially affects salary, and the process runs six to ten months across five stages. Specialist evidence therefore has to be complete before verification begins, not assembled later.

Is your specialist evidence ready before verification starts?

Dental applicants tend to be caught by an interaction between two SCFHS rules rather than by either one alone.

The first is that classification must be applied for correctly at registration and materially affects salary. The second is that verification must be complete before the registration application is submitted. Together they mean the evidence supporting a specialist classification has to be in the verification bundle, at the start, months before anyone at SCFHS assesses your level.

That is a different posture from a Dubai application, where a file can be strengthened as the authority raises queries. Here, the case for your classification is made in the documents you hand over on day one.

For dentists the evidence in question is usually specialty training documentation from a residency, a board or a postgraduate programme, and it is frequently held by an institution rather than by you. Establish what you can actually produce before you build a plan around a specialist title.

What does SCFHS require of dentists?

SCFHS assesses dental applications against its requirements for general and specialist classification.

Because the process is sequential and long, an application built on evidence you intend to obtain later is an application that stalls rather than one that takes slightly longer.

  • A recognised primary dental qualification
  • Specialty qualifications and training documentation, where you are applying for specialist classification
  • Current registration with the dental council or authority you practise under
  • Post-qualification clinical experience evidenced at the level you are claiming
  • [VERIFY: the qualifications SCFHS accepts for each dental classification, and the minimum post-qualification experience at each.]

What exam do dentists take?

A Prometric assessment set for dentistry, and set for your specialty where you are registering as a specialist.

Confirm where the assessment sits relative to verification before booking. The Saudi sequence puts verification first, and that is not universal across the Gulf.

[VERIFY: SCFHS examination blueprint, question count, duration and pass mark for this profession and its specialties. Obtain from SCFHS before publishing any figure.]

Why no single question count applies across professions, and what to ask your authority instead, is covered on our Prometric explainer.

What documents do dentists need?

What to assemble, with the items specific to dentists marked by what they have to establish.

  • Passport and photograph to the authority specification
  • Primary dental qualification, attestedAttested in the country that issued it, before verification begins.
  • Specialty qualifications and training documentationThis is the evidence your classification rests on, and it has to be in the file at the start.
  • Academic transcripts
  • Current dental registration or licenceFrom the dental council or authority you practise under.
  • Good standing certificate from your dental councilRequest late in the sequence, so it is still valid at assessment on a six to ten month process.
  • Experience certificates that establish the level of the postFor a specialist claim, employment dates alone do not evidence seniority.

Good standing must come from the dental council or authority holding your registration, and GCC authorities generally accept one only while it is under six months old. The sequencing trap is explained on our good standing guide.

How much does it cost for dentists?

Regulator and third-party fees only, paid by you directly to the authority or provider. Where a row reads Not published we hold no sourced figure and will not estimate one.

SCFHS publishes no profession-specific verification band, so the single range on file covers dentistry as it does every other profession. No examination or registration fee is on file.

Our advisory fee is not published. It is quoted per case, in writing, after a free eligibility consultation, because it depends on your title, how many credentials need verifying and whether attestation applies. The costs page explains what moves that number.

How long does it take?

Typically 6-10 months for SCFHS licensing overall. Five-stage process. Considerably longer than UAE licensing.

Six to ten months across five stages, each gating the next. For dentists the front-loaded risk is specialty documentation held by a training institution you may have left years ago.

Where your classification claim is straightforward, a dental file moves at the same pace as any other Saudi application: the sequence sets the clock, not the complexity.

Verification itself runs 15-25 working days from the date of payment and submission of a complete set of documents, and a resubmission costs 50 to 100 percent of the original fee. See DataFlow verification.

This page covers dentists under SCFHS specifically. The authority, the sibling professions and the same profession elsewhere in the Gulf are covered separately.

What else do dentists ask?

When is my classification decided?

At registration, from the evidence in your file. SCFHS is explicit that it must be applied for correctly at that point, and because verification precedes the application, that evidence has to be assembled months before anyone assesses it.

Can I strengthen my file after SCFHS raises a query?

Less than you can in the UAE. The Saudi sequence requires verification to complete before the registration application is submitted, so the opportunity to add evidence is earlier and narrower. Build the file you want assessed, not the file you plan to improve.

Does classification affect what I am paid as a dentist?

SCFHS states that classification level materially affects salary. The published bands in the cost section are the market context for general practitioner, specialist and consultant positions, and they are cited rather than ours.

How long does the whole thing take?

Six to ten months, across five stages. That is the published pattern and it reflects the structure of the process rather than a queue. If you are comparing against a UAE application, plan on a different horizon entirely.

Will an SCFHS licence let me practise in Dubai?

No. An SCFHS licence is valid only in Saudi Arabia and cannot be transferred to the UAE. A Dubai move means a separate DHA or DHCR application, though the verification report can often be reused.

Is there a separate regulator for any part of Saudi Arabia?

No. Saudi Arabia operates a single centralised licensing authority covering the whole country, unlike the UAE where each emirate licenses separately and Dubai Healthcare City operates its own regulator on top of that.
